POSITION DESCRIPTION
Communications Specialist
Function
This position serves as the lead brand promoter for the Wilson Chamber of Commerce (“the Chamber”) by creating and publishing content across various media. The Communications Specialist will be responsible for designing marketing collateral to strategically communicate the mission, vision, and activities of the Chamber to internal and external stakeholders and assist Chamber members achieve their promotional objectives. Additionally, the position will align Chamber messaging with that of other community partners to project a professional image of the Wilson business community. A familiarity with the Wilson business community is essential, as is an enthusiasm for contributing to civic life and market development.
The ideal candidate will have exemplary interpersonal skills, an ability to solve complex problems independently, and be comfortable collaborating with small teams in a constantly changing workflow.
A successful candidate will be detail-oriented and stylishly creative. The candidate should also have a curiosity about new technologies, including AI tools, that have the potential to strengthen the Chamber’s marketing capabilities.
The preferred candidate will have proficiency in the following disciplines:
- Social media marketing (including monetization and applied analytics)
- Web design
- Graphic design (using tools such as Adobe Creative Cloud and Canva)
- Photography/videography

Education
No specific degree or formal credential is required. Candidates will be evaluated based on demonstrated skills, experience, and ability to perform the responsibilities of the role.
Major Accountabilities
- Create and deliver key communication collateral (including print and digital material) to the membership and general public. Examples include newsletters, advertisements, flyers, brochures, logos, photos, videos, and the Chamber’s annual membership directory.
- Collaborate with Chamber staff to ensure key events are strategically marketed to stakeholder audiences.
- Monitor communication directed to the Chamber and craft appropriate responses.
- Regularly monitor and update the Chamber’s web presence and membership database and use licensed software to keep information on the Chamber domain current. Frequent updates to Chamber-administered social media platforms is required.
- Sell advertisement opportunities to members to meet or exceed budget targets and work to creatively increase non-dues revenue.
- Develop targeted promotion strategies for Chamber programs and membership rewards.
- As directed, work with other staff to ensure Chamber programs and events are successfully prepared, attended, and cleared.
- Other duties as assigned by the President to increase brand awareness of the Chamber.
This position is eligible for classification as either an IRS 1099 independent contractor with negotiable compensation, or as a full-time employee with the following benefits:
- Starting salary range: $38,000 - $42,000 plus commission income potential
- Health insurance, with 50% of the employee-only premium paid by the Chamber

- Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) retirement plan
- Flexible paid time off benefits
- This is a full-time salaried position, working approximately 40 hours per week.
- Periodically, the position will require work before or after regular business hours.
- 75% of work time is spent in a typical office setting, performing regular office functions.
- 25% of work time is spent off-site (including at member businesses and event venues), completing tasks related to event/program management, or otherwise interfacing with Chamber members.
- Occasionally, tasks related to event management will be physically demanding, and work outdoors in adverse weather conditions may be required. The ability to lift and move objects up to 50 lbs. is required.
