Should I join the Chamber?

The Wilson Chamber of Commerce (and nearly every other local chamber of commerce in the United States) is a voluntary membership, 501c6 nonprofit organization. This means that we exist entirely because businesses and individuals CHOOSE to invest in our mission, and our ability to operate depends on the generosity of our members.
We’re always inviting new members to join us, and we want as many businesses as possible working with us to make Wilson a great place to do business. However, membership in the Chamber is not something that should be taken lightly. When you invest with us, you’re making the statement that you’re committed to positive community transformation, so that your business and others can be successful here. When we ask you to join, we’re asking for a long-term partnership, not a one-month or one-year transactional exchange.
Before you join the Chamber, ask yourself the following questions to make sure membership is the right choice for you and your business:
- Do you believe our mission to “build a market where businesses prosper” is important?
- Is it necessary for a community to have a strong alliance of businesses that can serve as a unified voice for commerce and private enterprise in our market?
- Should local businesses have a “seat at the table” when decisions are made about community and government initiatives?
- Should there be a neutral forum where businesses, government, and charitable causes can all come together to network, share goals and ideas, and work together to make Wilson a better place?
- Is it important to have an organization designed for the purposes of promoting local businesses?
- Is it reasonable to invest a small amount of membership dues annually to ensure these things happen?
- Is your business mature and stable enough to contribute to these efforts?
If you answered “yes” to these questions, then you’re not only ready to join the Chamber, but your membership will be critically important to helping us become a better community and organization. If your answer to any of them was “no”, we’d love to discuss with you how the Wilson Chamber of Commerce can be a better advocate for business.
